2014-03-20 Considering recent claims that groups are important to teaching and learning, the authors examine the differences between groups and collections of people to see how one might create learning groups when designing learning and instruction. Based on literature in the fields of group dynamics and education, characteristics of groups are listed and explored. 2006-08-01 1 An evolving map of design practice and design research Liz Sanders — MakeTools — liz@maketools.com An evolving map of design practice and design research Design research is in a state of fl ux.The design research landscape has been the focus of a tremendous amount of exploration and growth over the past fi ve to 10 years. practices through activity and social interaction’, and based on the successful and traditional apprenticeship model (Brown, Collins and Duguid, 1989, p.

Research anxiety ANXIETY IN UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH METHODS COURSES: ITS NATURE AND IMPLICATIONS Elena C. Papanastasiou, Intercollege, Cyprus Michalinos Zembylas, Open University of Cyprus e-mail: papanast@msu.edu ABSTRACT Undergraduate students who are enrolled in research methods courses tend to believe that substantive and new nature of interaction design by viewing it as synonymous with HCI. In contrast to Winograd, Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction by Jenny Preece, Yvonne Rogers, and Helen Sharp (Preece et al., 2002) best reflects the view that interaction design is a subset of computing science. The text has widely been used Design and art. Today, the term design is generally used for what was formerly called the applied arts. The new term, for a very old thing, was perhaps initiated by Raymond Loewy and teachings at the Bauhaus and Ulm School of Design in Germany during the 20th century.

In this paper we propose a new model for interaction design research within HCI. Thus, design exploration is the activity area that allows the interaction design researcher to work with wholes-with complete, dynamic gestalts. At the other end of the spectrum of design exploration (i.e., closer to traditional research), we have previously suggested that there also seems to be efforts in interaction design research that include synthetic elements as an important driving force interaction design practice that resonate with practitioners themselves. In part one of this paper, we describe the mismatch between HCI research and interaction design practices. Then we present vignettes from an observational study of commercial design practice to illustrate the issues at hand. [IxD] Week 14.
